Please Sign on to Urge Senator Specter's Support of ICRC Access to All U.S. Detainees.
Dear Senator Specter:
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the abuses that may be occurring in the secret Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) prisons in Eastern Europe and around the world. In particular, the accusations of torture from former detainees have left us chilled – they sound too much like some of the things that were done at Abu Ghraib.
Because of our deep concern, we support legislation that would require the CIA to notify the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) of all detainees and to allow the ICRC access to them. The ICRC is a well-respected neutral party, with a long track record of working to protect basic human rights. Providing the ICRC with access to all detainees would help ensure that our country both ends the use of torture and makes clear to the world that we have done so. We also urge that this legislation require the CIA to abide by the guidelines in the Army Field Manual (which prohibits torture and inhumane treatment) while conducting interrogations, and bar the CIA from employing contractors to carry out interrogations.
Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, is remembered, among other things, for coining the phrase “sunlight is the best disinfectant.” Now would be a good time for a little sunlight. Please support ICRC access to all detainees, and please support any legislation that comes to the floor of the Senate that would require the CIA to provide the ICRC access to all detainees.
Thank you,
